Asura Gates
Waypoints
Asura Gates are free to use and will instantly port you from gate to gate (bar a small loading screen).
Waypoints cost a small amount of copper or silver (depending on your distance traveled.
Both ways of transportation are excellent, and will move you across the map quickly to meet up with your friends.
My advice to you is to find the Asura Gate in your main starting City as soon as you can. All cities are filled with dozens of waypoints, so there will be a waypoint next to the Asura Gate that you can map-travel to later.
As an aside. You can use the Hero Pannel (H) and click Enter the Mists, which is a PvP hub of sorts. There will be Asura gates within that will send you to either WvW or Lion's Arch.
Asura gates provide a method of instantaneous travel to other asura gates around Tyria. Asura gates are located in each playable race's main city and in some story-specific locations. Gates are marked in map views by a glowing purple circle. Travel between asura gates is free...

Waypoints
A waypoint, or a magi-matter-transportive device, is a floating stone marker that players can instantly travel to by using the map. In lore, it is an asuran creation.
Before a character can use a particular waypoint for map travel, it must be discovered through exploration. Locked waypoints will be displayed on the compass and map, and approaching the waypoint will unlock it for that character.
Map travel within a city is free, but travel to waypoints in other cities or the rest of the world costs a fee in coin based on the distance between the character's current location and the destination waypoint.
During and after dynamic events, waypoints can be taken over or "contested" by enemies. These waypoints will be unavailable for map travel until they have been liberated.
Map travel is not available during combat, but defeated players can choose to be revived at a waypoint for the same fee as regular map travel. If a character is defeated with no coin, coin will be taken from their account vault. If their account vault is also empty, they can be revived for free at the nearest waypoint.
A normal zone typically has between 10 and 20 waypoints.[1]
Shift-clicking on a waypoint on the world map creates a clickable link in chat.
