I'm an information security guy in my day job. O'Brien's advice is pretty good. The #1 tip I give people is to use a different password for every account you care about, which should include every account by which someone could do something with your money.
I use a nifty tool called KeePass to store my passwords, but there are other alternatives out there. The advantage to using a tool like that is you only need to remember one really good password, and you can use the random generator in the tool to create the others. (In my case, my wife has a copy of the master password, so if something happened to me she'd be able to retrieve the others.)
