Hey Guild,
I wanted to focus on making my ranger primarily skilled in DPS/crit damage. I don't really want to put much into my pet as I want to be able to do as much ranged damage as possible. I currently have a short bow as my main because I like the quick damage. My secondary is long sword and dagger. I wanted to get your advice on what to do with skills/stats/gear in order to be a solid dps ranger.
Thanks for your help

Perhaps something like: www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mcozmm9covaGMovaGMxxV0VmRqzmaWith full Berserker Gear and Runes of Ranger/Scholar/Thief/Adventurer/Ogre/Divinity to preference. It's relatively standard for Ranged DPS, although it would probably suit a Longbow/Shortbow build better than Shortbow/Sword+Dagger. Typically speaking, if you want Melee weapons, you need to invest into some sort of defensive stats, whether from gear or traits. Another reasonable (and slightly more well-rounded) set up would be to put the Skirmishing points into the Wilderness Survival tree. The build focuses on trait-lines more for the stats than for the traits themselves mostly, which has its pros and cons. Signet of the Beastmaster trait included will let Signet of Stone give you invulnerability from incomming attacks (conditions will still hurt you). 5 points in both Beastmaster and Wilderness Survival unlocks some really strong Adept Traits. There are, of course, variations. Some popular ones include using "Protect Me!" with the Beastmaster trait for Shout cooldowns. When coupled with a Traited Stone Signet, you can alternate between the two for extensive period of damage immunity. I would also like to add that all Rangers have a heavy damage investment into your pet. Even if you have the absolute best and most optimal single-target DPS build, your pet will be doing 25-30% of your damage. It's how the class is designed. If you have any questions, let me know.

This is what my wife loves.... her favorite toon in WoW was a Hunter and now she's playing Ranger's (yes plural, she started a second one) but since both of our Ranger's are lowbies I can't really comment on a build.
I will say that I"m suprised you don't like the Long Bow... as the #2 key on my lvl 29 Ranger really cranks out some dmg... the last few hits are 700 to 1k and the #3 makes the target vulnerable so long rang hits, hit pretty hard.
Now my wifey is a "pet" style player and we loved collecting rares in WoW, but we've found out that pets here seem to be meant for specific things. It does make the experience more challenging and being able to call your backup pet (after I finally figured out by accident you could even do that) has doubled our survival rate! ;D
All in all I like the Ranger's and he's currently my highest toon, but my Necro is coming up fast!

I appreciate the feedback. I think I'm interested in going shortbow/long bow over melee, for the fact that I want it to be ranged and don't want to focus on as much defense stats. So putting 5 points in beast mastery would be a decent for additional pet skills? I understand that the pets are a big part of the class, but I just wanted to use their skills as minimal as possible, so I can rack up damage while they are more of a tank to take hits or even a distraction to be honest. These links are great, thanks!
Also, I'm glad your wife enjoys the rangers! They are a blast. I do enjoy the long bow for the damage and AOE, but I think I like the look and feel of the short bow and just how quick they are powerful.

Putting five points into Beastmastery is the single highest DPS increase you will see in any trait a Ranger has to offer.
Whenever you swap pets while in combat, you get 2 seconds of quickness. This coupled with Quickening Zepher gives Rangers the highest Quickness uptime of any profession, and is staple to most of our damage.
